Jens Hansen was born in Denmark, the descendant of a long line of blacksmiths and stonemasons. He came to New Zealand with his family at the age of twelve and made his home here. He has long been regarded as one of New Zealand's foremost silversmiths; his first exhibition was in 1960.
Jens Hansen is, sadly, no longer with us, but his son Thorkild and his long-time colleague Ray Mitchell are pledged to carry on his work at the Jens Hansen Workshop, where they produce a distinctive range of sterling silver, gold and platinum jewellery, strong and sculptural in design . Many of Jens' original designs are still being produced, and are the basis of the collection. The Workshop motto is "less is more."
Although they have independently travelled, studied and practised their craft in Europe, New Zealand influences remain supreme in their work, as is evident in the pieces shown.
The workshop is situated in a seaside town in the South Island of New Zealand.
